\u201cIt\u2019s too noisy. I\u2019m not going to pay for a ticket to listen to your child scream for three hours,\u201d the man shouted sharply across the aisle.<\/p>\n

I winced and hugged the baby tighter to my chest. He\u2019d been crying for almost forty minutes now\u2014tired, frightened, sensitive to every sound. I rocked him, whispered to him, sang to him\u2014all to no avail.<\/p>\n

People around me started turning around. Some with irritation, some with pity.<\/p>\n

The man leaned closer, his face flushed with anger.<\/p>\n

I quietly replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d Excuse me, please\u2026<\/p>\n

He chuckled.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry the restroom. And stay there until he shuts up. Or better yet, the whole flight. And if not, pay for my ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands were shaking. The baby was choking with tears, and my insides were clenching with shame and helplessness. I stood up. Not because I\u2019d agreed, but because I couldn\u2019t bear his looks or his voice any longer. I didn\u2019t have the money for another ticket. I\u2019d already sold my last belongings to pay for this trip.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d already taken a few steps down the aisle when a man in a dark suit appeared next to me. Calm, reserved, confident. He looked at me and said quietly,<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, please come with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

He spoke briefly with the flight attendant and then led me forward to first class.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit here,\u201d he said, gesturing to a wide seat. \u201cIt\u2019s more comfortable here with the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t\u2026\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

When the kind stranger returned to my seat, the man in the aisle laughed loudly:<\/p>\n

But it was at that moment that the stranger in the suit did something that left the entire cabin frozen in shock. <\/strong><\/h1>\n

The man in the aisle looked up\u2014and froze. His face paled. The smile vanished.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood afternoon,\u201d the man in the suit said coldly, sitting down next to me. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to see you here.\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned a little closer and quietly added:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to come to work tomorrow. People who talk to mothers and children like that don\u2019t work for my company.\u201d<\/p>\n
